Tibetan Medicine is one of the oldest healing sciences on earth. Known in Tibetan as Sowa Rigpa or Sorig — the Science of Healing — it offers a complete system of healthcare rooted in a sophisticated understanding of body, energy, and mind: diagnostic methods including pulse and urine analysis; treatments spanning lifestyle, diet, herbal medicine, and hands-on therapies; and a contemplative tradition integrating meditation, mantra, breathwork, and inner yoga. For centuries, this knowledge was preserved and transmitted within Tibet and the Himalayas. It is now reaching a wider world.

I have been a student and practitioner of the Tibetan sciences of mind and medicine for more than two decades. In Tibetan Medicine, I have trained and practiced for more than 13 years under the guidance of Dr. Nida Chenagtsang, a renowned Tibetan physician, scholar, and lineage holder who has dedicated his life to preserving and sharing Sowa Rigpa with the world.

I helped develop Sorig Khang International, the nonprofit foundation established by Dr. Nida to support a worldwide network of Tibetan Medicine centers, teachers, and practitioners in over 40 countries — working directly with the founders on brand, positioning, and organizational development, building the website and digital infrastructure, developing programs and curricula, designing a global practitioner network, coordinating and supporting centers worldwide, and helping organize and run the Sowa Rigpa Congress.

At Dr. Nida's request, I founded a Sorig Khang center in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2016 — a nonprofit offering professional training, public education, clinical services, and contemplative practice. I built the organization from the ground up. I created its brand, communications, and website, bringing an ancient and unfamiliar tradition to a modern audience in clear, accessible terms.

I developed a two-year, 375-hour professional training spanning the full scope of Tibetan medical theory and practice — a curriculum created at Dr. Nida's direct instruction and made available to Sorig Khang centers worldwide. I wrote and compiled educational texts, taught foundational courses, and brought in senior teachers for advanced studies. I established clinical consultations and therapeutic offerings that served more than 60 patients. I led meditation and mantra groups and practices in the Yuthok Nyingthig, the unique spiritual tradition of Tibetan Medicine.

Over the years, I cultivated a community of more than 300 students, patients, and practitioners, and extended programming to New Orleans, Portland, and online. Our center became an accessible home for a living tradition — a place where people came together around the shared wish to understand and care for themselves and others.

The tradition continues to reach a wider world. Sorig Khang International carries this work forward through centers on six continents. And my own study, practice, and teaching of the Tibetan sciences of mind and medicine continues — it is the discipline that underlies everything I do, and the foundation of Applied Humanity.

“My wish is that Tibetan Medicine would spread like the infinite expanse of the sky to benefit all sentient beings.”

— Yuthok Yönten Gönpo, Father of Tibetan Medicine
